For a photographer, it's not who you know, but who knows you and Robert's known to those who have done some serious advertising over the years: AT&T, Sony, Bacardi, Porsche, Nestle, Guinness, American Express, FedEx, Smirnoff, Heinz, DeBeers, Chivas Regal, Mercedes, Southern Comfort, Singapore Airlines, VW, American Airlines, Royal Mail, Pepsi, Vauxhall, Coca Cola, Fiat…….
Robert's always invested in staying creative: rather than start to produce stale work he'll take himself off to get re-excited about film and photography by doing personal work or something completely different. This has led to stunning photography from Poland, Japan and New Zealand, expertise in obscure printing processes, a pilot's licence, a converted farmhouse in France and blacksmith's forge in this country.
However, creativity is not enough. To be in demand and stay in business for four decades Robert has had to get his hands dirty in the murky world of self-promotion and the mercurial business behind the lens. He's employed a PR agency, had an identity designed and through the course of his career set up studios and darkrooms both for himself and as businesses in their own right that have attracted some of the best printers and photographers of the time.
As an example of the professional benefits of personal work; Robert had his own large format camera built to shoot classic American cars in the USA. This indulgence led to some jaw-dropping shots (one is in the National Photographic Museum's permanent collection) and made Robert the must-have car photographer for several years, winning the Art Directors Club of New York best world-wide automotive advert 1988.
Other accolades include D&ADs, a BISFA award for a documentary, a Sun Life award for excellence in Photography, an AOP Gold Award and a major Kodak award.
He opened Frontier Pictures in NY and London in 1997. Frontier shot ads for Union Bank of Switzerland, Samsung, Swiss Rail, Pizza Hut and Revlon and co-produced a feature film.
Photography has continued with work for T.Mobile, Lloyds TSB, Citibank, London Pride, Marie Claire and Virgin Media TV. Film clients have included Volvo, Philip Morris and Goldman Sachs.
Just as Robert has oscillated between personal and advertising photography, so his film career has been bursts of ads, punctuated with award-winning personal photography, documentaries and commercials.
In January 2012 Robert co-founded Redwood Entertainment Ltd; a company formed to develop and produce films, programs and games for the 'Trans Media' revolution. He takes with him his own projects developed over the past five years to join those of his experienced partners to begin an exciting new venture.
